The Onam Festival - Dates
The annual harvest festival and festivities of Onam celebrated by Malayalis from across the world starts this year on the 12th of August 2021 with Athachamayam, a grand procession from Thrippunithura near Kochi to the Vamanamoorthy Temple in Thrikkakara, Ernakulam district.
12th August 2021 : Atham - Athachamayam - Grand Procession
13th August 2021 : Chithira (Pookkalam) - Floral Rangoli, which traditionally starts on the Atham day. It grows in size with every passing day of Onam.
14th August 2021 : Chodhi - Onnakodi - New clothes bought and worn for the occasion of Onam
15th August 2021 : Vishakam - Preparations begin for the grand feast of Onam Sadya, upto 30 dishes, which are held on the days of Uthradam and Thiruvonam.
16th August 2021 : Anizham (Vallamkali) - Snake Boat Race on the Pamba river. Also widely celebrated by the Malayalis in Singapore at the Jurong Lake.
17th August 2021 : Thriketa - Celebrate Onam with some quality family time.
18th August 2021 : Moolam - Celebrations across the state of Kerala with Music and Dance with performers showcasing traditional dance forms including Thiruvathira, Kummattikali, Pulikali, Thumbi Thullal, Onam Kali and others
19th August 2021 : Pooradam - Installation of an image of the Thrikkakara Appan or Onatthappan (Vishnu in the form of Vamana) at home.
20th August 2021 : Uthradam - The First Onam. The eve of Onam, by traditional tales - the day of arrival of King Mahabali, is considered the most auspicious day to shop for fruits and vegetables
21st August 2021 : Thiruvonam - The main day of Onam. The pookalam, which has grown in size with each passing day, is now complete in its full artistic glory. Relish the 9 course meal of Onasadya with upto 30 dishes served on plantain leaves.
22nd August 2021 : Avvittom - Third Onam - Immersion of the Onathappan (Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana) Statue
23rd August 2021 : Chatayam - Fourth Onam - The concluding day of Onam, celebrations continue with boat races and Pulikali dance performances
